Chief Technology Officer

Brian Kursar leads Technology, Global Big Data and IoT Strategy as Chief Technology Officer for Toyota Connected North America.

Brian started at Toyota Motors North America in 2001 as a Quality Assurance Engineer and Automotive Systems Architect spending 7 years working in the Vehicle Supply Chain Group. In 2008 he served as Principal Architect for the Product Quality Analytics Application spearheading the first NoSQL based Analytics solution to be deployed at Toyota. During this project he developed a passion for unstructured text and went on to architect and design the visualizations for Toyota’s Social Media Intelligence Center. From there he served as Chief Architect on the Toyota Customer 360 Insights platform, where he championed Data Science and Big Data Technology adoption across the Enterprise. His contributions brought together for the first time Digital, CRM, Survey, Social and Retail Customer data under one unified platform. This platform launched predictive models at scale to identify customers at risk of churn as well as prospective in-market consumers to enable micro-segmentation for digital advertising campaigns. He is a five-time winner of the North American Toyota Innovation Fair and has two recently issued and eight pending patents for Toyota around Mobile Consumer Profiling and Social Media Text Classification.

In 2015 Brian joined Warner Bros. to serve as Global Vice President and Chief Architect of its Big Data direct-to consumer advertising and analytics platforms. In 2018 Brian decided to return to Toyota, spurred by the formation of its all-new company, Toyota Connected, and his long-time passion to drive innovation in Big Data, Digital and Mobility. After a year of serving as Vice President of the Toyota Connected Data Services Team, he was promoted to the role of Chief Technology Officer.

Brian comes from a long history of Kursar’s at Toyota. His uncle, George Kursar, worked in the Information Systems department at Toyota Motor Sales for more than 42 years, where he held various positions including Manager of Applications Support and Senior Applications Engineer. While the two never formally worked on any projects together, both shared a passion for driving cost savings through performance tuning. Brian’s sister Christina also worked for Toyota Financial Services in Business Intelligence Operations.

Asked about his vision for Data at Toyota Connected, he says:

“Our vision is to drive business value out of data to support product research and the creation of new and exciting data services for Toyota customers that make driving safer, more convenient and fun. Our mission goes beyond simply delivering cost effective and scalable data platforms that enable us to be part of the conversation. We aim to BE the conversation by re-imagining how data can be used to provide Toyota with a competitive edge in Global Mobility.”

As Chief Technology Officer for Toyota Connected, Brian is now focused on Toyota’s Global Mobility and Connected Vehicle Strategy, and is a champion of emerging technologies such as computer vision, deep learning and vehicle edge computing. He’s also leading the transformation of Toyota Connected from a Data company to an Artificial Intelligence company.
