Brian Kursar leads Toyota Connected Global Big Data Strategy as Vice President and Chief Data Scientist for the Toyota Connected Data Services group.

Brian started at Toyota Motors North America in 2001 as a Quality Assurance Engineer and Automotive Systems Architect spending 7 years working in the Vehicle Supply Chain Group. In 2008 he worked as Principal Architect for the Product Quality Analytics Application spearheading the first NoSQL based Analytics solution to be deployed at Toyota. During this project he developed a passion for unstructured text and went on to architect and design the visualizations for Toyota’s Social Media Intelligence Center. From there he served as Chief Architect on the Toyota Customer 360 Insights platform where he championed Data Science and Big Data Technology adoption in the Enterprise. His contributions brought together for the first time Digital, CRM, Survey, Social, and Retail Customer data under one unified platform. This platform launched predictive models at scale to identify customers at risk of churn and prospective In-Market Consumers to enable micro-segmentation for digital advertising campaigns. During his time at TMNA, Brian contributed to one issued and five pending patents around Mobile Consumer Profiling and Social Media Text Classification.

Brian left TMNA in 2015 to serve as Global Vice President and Chief Architect at Warner Bros. for their Big Data Direct to Consumer Advertising and Analytics platforms. After 3 years, and forming of the new company, Toyota Connected, Brian decided to return to Toyota to continue driving innovation in Big Data, Digital, and Mobility.

When asked about his vision for Toyota Connected, here was his response:

“At Toyota Connected Data Services, our vision is to drive business value out of data to support product research and the creation of new and exciting data services for Toyota customers that make driving safer, more convenient, and fun. Our mission is not to simply deliver cost effective and scalable data platforms that enable us to be part of the conversation, we aim to be the conversation by re-imagining how data can be used to provide Toyota with competitive edge in Global Mobility.”

As Vice President and Chief Data Scientist for Toyota Connected, he will be focusing on Toyota’s Global Connected Vehicle Big Data platform as well as championing emerging technologies such as blockchain, computer vision, deep learning, and vehicle edge computing. He and his team will be leading the transformation of Toyota Connected from a Data company to an Artificial Intelligence company.
